Winter Solstice and Yule
December 21st welcomes the winter solstice and the start of Yule. The winter solstice marks the shortest day of the year. The year has turned and brighter days are coming as we head slowly back towards Spring and Summer.
What is the Winter Solstice?
The shortest day of the year happens when the Earth’s North Pole is tilted farthest from the Sun.
For Pagans and Wiccans, the celebration of Winter Solstice is also known as Yule and is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world.
Norsemen of Northern Europe regarded the sun as a giant wheel, turning to bring the seasons into being.
The Ancient Romans held the feast of Saturnalia, which ran for seven days from 17th December, to celebrate the rebirth of the year.
Yule celebrations pre-date Christianity by thousands of years and we see more people reconnecting to these ancient celebrations as they choose to be closer to nature.
