Hair Growth & Strengthening Rosemary Essential Oil, The Facts

Rosemary essential oil and its potential hair growth properties is everywhere on the internet right now, so I thought I’d write a little about this amazing oil and give you some carrier oil options along with a few recipes.

Rosemary essential oil is widely recognised for its various health benefits, including its ability to promote hair growth and strengthen the hair. It is derived from the rosemary herb, scientifically known as Rosmarinus officinalis, through a steam distillation process. Rosemary oil has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and is now commonly found in hair care products due to its positive effects on both hair and scalp.

The primary mechanism behind rosemary oil's hair growth-promoting properties is its ability to stimulate blood circulation in the scalp. Improved blood flow brings more oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles, which can promote hair growth and prevent hair loss. Additionally, rosemary oil has antioxidant properties that help to neutralise free radicals, which can contribute to hair damage and premature hair loss.

If your considering using rosemary oil for hair growth and strengthening, you should always dilute it with a carrier oil. Carrier oils serve as a base to dilute essential oils and help to spread them evenly on the scalp and hair. Some carrier oils commonly used with rosemary oil:

Jojoba oil: Jojoba oil closely resembles the natural sebum produced by the scalp, making it an excellent carrier oil for all hair types. It moisturises the scalp, promotes hair growth, and makes your hair nice and shiny.

Coconut oil: Coconut oil is known for its nourishing properties and ability to penetrate the hair shaft, providing deep hydration. It also helps reduce protein loss from the hair, making it stronger and less prone to breakage.

Castor oil: Castor oil is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E, which are beneficial for hair growth and conditioning. It has a thick consistency that can help moisturise the scalp providing a protective coating to hair strands.

Almond oil: Almond oil is lightweight and easily absorbed by the scalp and hair. It contains high levels of vitamin E, which promotes hair growth and adds shine. Almond oil can also help reduce scalp inflammation and dandruff.

RECIPES

A simple recipe for a single rosemary oil hair application:

  • 5-7 drops of rosemary essential oil

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl or container, combine the carrier oil and rosemary essential oil.
  2. Mix well to ensure the oils are evenly blended.
  3. Before applying the mixture to your hair, make sure your hair is dry and untangled.
  4. Using your fingertips gently massage the oil mixture into your scalp for a few minutes, focusing on areas where you want to promote hair growth.
  5. Once covered, work the remaining oil down to the ends of your hair.
  6. Leave the oil on for at least 30 minutes, or preferably overnight.
  7. After the recommended time, shampoo and condition your hair as usual to remove the oil.  (Quick tip, add shampoo to dry hair first then add water)

It's important to note that while rosemary oil is generally safe for topical use, some individuals may be allergic or sensitive to it. Perform a patch test before using the oil extensively and discontinue use if you experience any adverse reactions. Additionally, pregnant women and those with certain medical conditions should consult a healthcare professional before using essential oils.

Incorporating rosemary oil into your hair care routine, along with carrier oils, can help stimulate hair growth, strengthen the hair, and improve overall hair health.
